The perfect Waterberg weekend, planned hour by hour

Two nights, one tank of fuel and everything worth stopping for between Bela-Bela and Vaalwater.

Leave Johannesburg after lunch on Friday and you will be watching the escarpment turn copper by five. The Waterberg rewards travellers who slow down — this route is deliberately short on driving and long on sitting still.

Friday evening belongs to Bela-Bela. Check in, soak in the mineral springs and eat somewhere with a deck. Saturday is for the reserve: a sunrise drive, a late breakfast, an afternoon that goes nowhere in particular.

Sunday morning, take the Melkrivier road toward Vaalwater. Stop at the farm stalls, the museum, and the last coffee shop before the highway. You will be home before dark and already planning the next one.
